How to Batch-Compress an Image Folder Without Chaos

The hard part of a batch is not selecting many files. It is proving that mixed content tolerates one setting and that every output remains traceable and reversible.

Classify the material before batching

One folder may contain JPEG photographs, PNG screenshots, HEIC originals, and transparent logos. Forcing everything into one format can remove alpha, soften text, or discard original editing data. The first batch step is grouping by purpose, not dragging immediately.

A safe five-step batch

  1. Copy the source folder or confirm a reliable backup; never experiment on the only originals.
  2. Choose three to five difficult samples per group: hair, night noise, gradients, text, and transparent edges.
  3. Set output format, longest edge, and quality preset, then inspect samples at 100% zoom.
  4. Drop the full folder and let the queue complete; prevent sleep during a long run.
  5. Download the ZIP to a new folder and check count, filenames, orientation, transparency, and whether files open.

Why a large batch can slow down or fail

Local compression uses browser memory. With many high-resolution images, compressed inputs, decoded pixels, and outputs may coexist. A slow tab does not imply uploading; it usually means the device is encoding heavily and reclaiming memory.

  • Split work into perhaps 50–200 files per batch, adjusted for dimensions and device memory.
  • Close other memory-heavy tabs and applications.
  • Separate RAW/TIFF from ordinary JPEG because decoding cost differs.
  • If one file repeatedly fails, isolate it and preserve the source.

Record a repeatable recipe

Write project, purpose, output format, longest edge, and preset into a folder name or job note—for example, “site-cases_WebP_1920_Smart”. The next update can reproduce the same delivery rule instead of letting every teammate improvise a quality level.

tinysqueeze performs the repeated computation; it does not define your business standard. A maintained website should document its sample set, target formats, and inspection checklist so a human remains accountable for the result.
