How Should You Compress App Store Screenshots?

App store screenshots usually carry marketing copy and UI detail layered on top, demanding more clarity than an ordinary screenshot, while store consoles also cap the file size per screenshot — both need to be balanced.

Screenshots and ordinary photos need different trade-offs

Ordinary photo compression aims for "no visible difference to the eye," but app store screenshots often layer promotional copy, icons, and borders — vector or near-vector elements — on top of the UI. Over-compressing introduces jagged or blurry text edges that are far more noticeable than quality loss on photographic content, and this is exactly the asset deciding whether someone downloads the app.
