How to Compress Ecommerce Product Images Without Losing Important Detail
Slow product pages lose visitors; blurry product images lose trust. The answer is not one "best" setting but handling each image according to where it appears on the page.
Three groups by placement
Listing pages need fast scanning, main images build trust, and detail shots need zoom. Shipping one huge original for the front end to shrink wastes bandwidth; shipping one small image breaks zoom.

Longest-edge settings only shrink, never enlarge: images already smaller than the setting stay as they are.
Let content decide the format
Product photography suits JPEG, WebP, or AVIF; transparent cut-outs, size charts, and promos with small text suit PNG. Do not sacrifice transparent edges or text sharpness for a uniform format.
What to inspect
White-background products show halos around their outline, fabric and jewellery lose texture, and gradient packaging bands. Sample the hardest SKUs, not just one easy product.
- Check transparent edges on both white and dark backgrounds. Smart auto also compares transparent images on both a white and a black background when judging quality, because halos show on one or the other.
- Zoom in on materials and reflections.
- Compare brand colours and packaging text. Colour profiles are kept, so colour shifts usually come from over-compression, not a lost colour space.
